![]() Then you have the fact that there was a failure after I replaced the gasket myself. Maybe there is something else going on that is causing perfectly good gaskets and tube seals to fail. Maybe they messed up again as I was first inclined to think, but then again, maybe not. The next failure after the shop re-did it is a tough one. Maybe the tech goofed up a bit and pinched the gasket or something. I can also rationalize the failure shortly after the shop replaced the gasket the first time. That was quite a few years and quite a few miles. I can understand the first failure at 175k miles. ![]() I neglected to note the area of failure at 195k miles in my original post but that was leaking out the passenger rear corner and into 2 of the 3 spark plug tubes (I didn't record which specific two). In some of these failures it's been weeping oil out the cover, down the back side of the engine. Nor is it only one specific cylinder tube seal nor only one specific cylinder bank (the rear has failed more times than the front, but notice the front also failed at 191k miles when I believe the shop had replaced it at 175k miles as well when it was in for the first failure of the rear). It's not JUST the spark plug tube seals that are leaking either. My struggle is why this thing keeps leaking over and over again. Can you help me understand if you still believe that explains the issue given I have clarified the oil is on the top/ceramic side of the plugs? If you think it does, can you clarify why? I'm not super educated on the VCM muzzling stuff just yet. Maybe somehow we got lucky such that this piston ring issue is not biting us. Over the coarse of the 212k miles so far, we've not had any misfire problems except related to these leaks where the ceramic side and the ignition coil get saturated. Given I'm having an issue with the ceramic side of the plug being coated in oil, that TSB doesn't seem relevant. Honestly, I didn't even know about that TSB until yesterday. Those seals are part of a valve cover gasket kit and I'd expect they were replaced both times the shop did the job as they were when I did the most recent job. It seems the oil must be leaking through the spark plug tube seals. Good point, I should have been clearer! The coil and ceramic portion of the plug have been saturated in oil with each of the failures where I noted oil leaking into the spark plug. I'd appreciate ideas of what else should be checked before replacing the gasket again.Ī couple of things that come to mind as possibilities are: Now that the rear bank gasket has been replaced twice by a shop and once by me and leaked after all of them, it seems there must be something more to what's going on. That very well could have been a bad assumption. I thought they must have been doing sloppy work or something. When the rear bank leaked the 3rd time I was frustrated and decided I didn't trust the shop so I replaced it myself. 212,597 miles, rear bank leaking again into the #3 cylinder spark plug tube ![]() 195,698 miles, rear bank leaking yet again, replaced it myself this time 191,790 miles, front bank leaking into #4 spark plug, replaced the gasket myself. 182,292 miles, rear bank leaking out the back side of the cover, took back to the shop and they replaced it again, no cost to me but no explanation of why it leaked again 175,910 miles, rear bank leaking into #3 spark plug tube, replaced by a shop But who knows if that was the right e below. We've had a series of valve cover gasket leaks on our 2011 Odyssey (that we've owned since new): The same spot in the rear had a decent gouge but I decided I could live with it. Their price was 441.00 but they price-matched HondaPartsnow!!!! which was amazing. We took a two hour detour to the local dealer to get a new one. After removing the front valve cover we discovered the middle hole on the valve cover had disintegrated. One trip to advanced auto parts for the Dorman brand replacement (it was instock)Ģ. On like step two, removing the air box, the old intake tube ripped apart. Overall the job was pretty straightforward and I followed the excellent video from MrRanger who did the job on his Odyssey (everything was pretty much the same expect for a few minor bracket locations)ġ. I had oil leaking badly from the rear valve and a little bit from the front. After 7 hours, a trip to the dealer and trip to advanced auto parts, I just completed replacing both valve covers on my 2011 Accord EX-L V6 with 238k miles.
